King of North Dandy for a day

By Nick Creely

Ex-Richmond cult hero Jake King will make a special appearance for North Dandenong in the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 Reserves on Saturday at Lois Twohig Reserve, to help give the Maroons some much needed exposure.

The former 107-game AFL player and now owner of tattoo parlour City of Ink Melbourne – who spent eight years at Punt Road, becoming a household name for many Tiger fans – is the major sponsor for the club this season, and will also be attending a function at the club on Saturday night.

King’s AFL career was cut short during the 2014 season due to a toe injury, but made a name for himself as a small explosive forward with elite forward pressure, and will almost certainly take his competitive attitude to the cricket field on Saturday.

Training on both Tuesday and Thursday, King apparently used all of his power to hit the ball a long way, and will be looking to clear the fences at Lois Twohig, weather permitting. Known as quite a talented cricketer, King will add plenty of firepower to the side.

King, who is affectionately known as the ‘Push Up King’, will be joined by Richmond champion Dale ‘Flea’ Weightman for a Q&A session during the club’s trivia night, which is sure to be an entertaining insight into the world of AFL and the lives of the two cult heroes.

There will also be an auction on the night, with two massive items up for grabs. The first is a Richmond Experience package, which includes two corporate 3121 tickets to a Richmond home game, level 2 priority seating, including access to a private dining room, plus two passes to the change rooms after the game.

The second major prize on the night is a signed 2014 World Cup Socceroos jersey.

The Maroons encourage those in the community to get along on Saturday and enjoy the action, with the bar and canteen open.
