Doveton amateur boxing junior Levi Harrison continued his fine form with an interstate win over Tasmanian boxer Angus Barker during a Boxing Select match in the town of Penguin, Tasmania.
Harrison was picked to represent Regional Victoria Boxing in a cup tournament against Tasmania and the youngster did his state proud by defeating Barker over three two-minute rounds.
From the opening bell, Harrison set the pace, flying straight into the centre of the ring and landing a strong left jab. The Tasmanian boxer moved away and countered with his own jab, but it was the tall Doveton boxer who had the most success, winning the first round by landing right hands through and over the guard of his opponent.
In the second round, Barker used counter punch tactics and his feet to move around Harrison with good effect, perhaps taking the second round with his more accurate punching. But some stern words from Victorian coach Ryan Wilson saw Harrison set about his opponent with renewed aggression, forcing Barker against the ropes by landing left right combinations to both head and body.
Wilson was pleased about putting the exciting young boxer into the fray of his first interstate trip, saying Harrison has worked hard for this opportunity and it was a pleasure to see him develop.
It was only the inexperience of the Doveton boxer that he was not able to register a count or stoppage against the Tasmanian after connecting with strong solid right hand punches that visibly hurt his opponent.
Levi – who will be jetting off to New Zealand shortly for a massive chance to represent his state – relishes the hard work and competitiveness of the boxing caper.
“I pride myself on hard work and commitment so that I can be mentally and physically prepared to fight,“ he said recently.
“From now until we leave it is just hard work and building up the skill and fitness to be best prepared for the event.”
It was a strong performance from the Doveton boxing product, who looks to set to take on bigger and better things this season with some more confidence.
