Helped by Heroes- Keysborough College held a World Cup Soccer Festival last month to conclude its eight-week Heroes Program. 56144

By Nicole Williams
KEYSBOROUGH College is focusing on teaching its students social skills through its Heroes program.
Students in Years 9 and 10 have undertaken an eight-week Heroes program run by the Professional Footballers Association to promote respect, fair play, teamwork and honesty.
“The students participated in a range of activities to develop team building skills and community values,” Keysborough College PE teacher Nicole Vella said.
“The themes of loyalty, teamwork, fair play and respect underpinned each lesson.”
Each week, Grant Brebner, Leigh Broxham, Matthew Kemp and Rodrigo Vargus from the Melbourne Victory came to the school to run activities promoting the four social values.
“The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot from their footballing mentors,” Ms Vella said. The program concluded with a World Cup Soccer Festival organised by the 17 students and held for Year 7 and 8 students.
The Melbourne Victory players also attended the festival.
Ms Vella said the program was so successful, the school hoped to run the program again next year.
She thanked the Melbourne Victory players and the Professional Footballers Association for organising the program.
