Hoons help speed hump residents

HOONS who damaged a traffic counter have strengthened residents’ claims that they are plagued by dangerous driving, according to the council’s chief engineer.
The counter was installed in late April to monitor driver speed and traffic volume after Trewin Street residents who were fed-up with hoons installed rubber speedhumps without the council permission in a bid to cull dangerous driving in their street.
City of Greater Dandenong engineering services director Tim Tamlin this week said the Trewin Street traffic counter was put out of service on Saturday, 6 May after a motorist deliberately spun the wheels of a car on it.
Mr Tamlin said the burn-out that damaged the counter had strengthened the residents’ claims.
“It definitely adds weight to the residents’ case when people do things like that,” he said.
Council workmen removed the speed humps and installed the counter on 28 April.
On Monday, 8 May Trewin Street residents increased their pressure on the council when they handed Greater Dandenong councillors two petitions, including one from the street’s 21 children.
The petition was handwritten in a child’s writing and was signed by 21 young children aged mainly about nine and 10 years old. The children state they ‘want the council to please put in speed humps, to stop the speeding cars and to stop the burnouts’.
Greater Dandenong council was still waiting for the results from its traffic counters this week before talking to residents about their concerns.
