Funding for the future

THE City of Greater Dandenong’s Economic Development Unit plans to coax investment from businesses outside the municipality.
The plans are part of the 2005 Economic Development Strategy adopted by council on Monday night.
Enticing businesses to relocate was among the top priorities, along with building close trade ties with Asia, working with educational institutions to provide a skilled and adaptable workforce.
The unit also plans to support the growth of existing businesses and lobby State and Federal governments to ensure the necessary infrastructure is available to attract business.
Unit manager Alison Fitzgerald said in her report to council that the strategy’s aim was to help the city sustain balanced and continuous growth in business, industry and technology.
“This strategy will guide the core economic development activities of council over the next 10 years for the specific purpose of enhancing economic prosperity within Greater Dandenong.
“This will lead to better employment opportunities for the workforce and our residents and greater shareholder value for business owners,” Ms Fitzgerald said in the report.
The strategy was developed with South East Networks and the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance.
Councillor Kevin Walsh described the strategy as an important and well thoughtout document.
“The City of Greater Dandenong is a very fast growing area and this document highlights our strengths and where we need to go to maximise the potential of economic growth in the region.”
