SOUTH East Networks’ first Showcasing Women in Business breakfast for 2008 was held last Friday at the Sandown Regency Motor Inn.
The two hour event started at 7am and featured guest speaker, Tiananmen Square massacre survivor, Helen Shao.
Ms Shao was born in 1961 and raised in the Chinese city of Tianjin during the Cultural Revolution.
She completed a bachelor of pure mathematics at Tianjin University in China in 1983 and after lecturing for three years she undertook her masters in applied mathematics and continued lecturing in economics and finance.
Surviving the Tiananmen Square massacre, Ms Shao was forced to flee to Australia in 1989 where she won a scholarship to the Australian National University to complete her PhD in applied finance.
Her first professional job in Australia was a treasury analyst with Citibank and she then embarked on a successful career with Westpac and HSBC.
Being a successful business owner, financial adviser and business lecturer, Ms Shao is also the author of two books, Your First Home Made Easy and Wake up to Wealth. The books share her experiences and knowledge on becoming financially free.
