THE City of Greater Dandenong will lose its planning authority throughout the $50 million rejuvenation of central Dandenong.
Planning Minister Rob Hulls will become responsible for planning decisions, under the guidance of VicUrban, the State Government’s urban development body, and the council.
CEO Carl Wulff said the council would still have a major influence on decisions throughout the 10 to 15year process to revamp Dandenong’s central business area.
The rejuvenation also includes the $17.5 million George Street Bridge, and a $25 million contribution to the Metro 3175 housing development at the former Dandenong saleyards site.
“It’s fair to say the council would have been happy to be the planning authority.
“But that amount of money is a big investment from the State Government, so I guess you have to compromise to get what you want.
“While the minister will be the responsible authority, we will have a major say in what happens.”
He said a committee would be formed of council and community representatives to make recommendations to the minister on decisions throughout the process.
“We’ll have discussions with VicUrban about the makeup of the committee.
“VicUrban and Department of Sustainability staff will be in the same building, and working with us on planning approvals.
“If anything, it brings resources we don’t already have.”
