College is second best at chess

CHESS is a game that is easy to play, but hard to master.
Students at St John’s College in Dandenong came close to proving their mastery when the school chess team finished runner-up in the Southern Independent Schools Chess Championships earlier this month.
St John’s entered three teams, each consisting of four students.
The teams finished with a combined score of 46.5 – eight points behind winners John Paul College.
However, it was a tremendous effort that won the team second place.
St John’s chess coordinator Martyn McDermott said he was rapt with students’ efforts.
“The students who took part in this competition have shown great commitment to the college,” Mr McDermott said.
“All of the coaches are very impressed with their performance, and it is hoped that we will achieve similar results in years to come.”
