Castle cabaret

By Bridget Cook
THE Castle in Dandenong will be transformed into the seedy Kit Kat Klub of 1931, when Dandenong Theatre Company Inc presents Cabaret.
The production will be performed among true cabaret-style seating, evoking the true spirit of the corrupt Kit Kat Klub.
Producer Matt Caton, said this production was a real change for the company.
“We saw this as an opportunity to do something different in a different space, and Cabaret at The Castle was the perfect fit,” he said. Cabaret will be set in Berlin in 1931, during the eve of the Nazis’ rise to power.
Based around the seedy nightlife of The Kit Kat Klub, the story focuses on a young English cabaret singer, Sally Bowles, and her relationship with an American writer Cliff Bradshaw.
A sub-plot involves the doomed relationship between German boarding house owner Fraulein Schneider and her elderly suitor, the Jewish Herr Shultz.
Overseeing all the action is the sly and mischievous Emcee, who serves as a constant metaphor for the state of Germany throughout the show.
“We intend to transform The Castle into the seedy Kit Kat Klub, so you can expect some good old-fashioned German burlesque and debauchery from the moment you enter,” Mr Caton said.
Cabaret will be at The Castle until 23 May. Cost is $30 for a seat at a table or $22 for standing room.
