Art from heritage

LOCAL artist Mira Skaler drew inspiration from her yearly trips to Greece and Serbia to create her latest exhibition.
The exhibition, My Balkan Heart, will be held at the Upper Walker St Gallery until 29 April and includes family portraits, landscapes and letters from the Cyrillic alphabet. The art is presented in woodcuts, linocuts and paintings in acrylic and oil.
Ms Skaler migrated to Australia from the former Yugoslavia in 1972 and said much of her work tells stories from her heritage.
“Images include family members, symbols and significant people from my childhood,” she said.
“Also included are important places that I still visit when I make my yearly trips.”
Ms Skaler received an Advanced Certificate in Art Design and a Diploma of Visual Arts from Chisholm Institute. She has participated in many community-based projects and has received numerous awards for her artwork. She is represented in collections in Serbia, England and Australia.
The Upper Walker St Gallery is open from Monday-Friday 11am until 5pm and Saturday 11am until 3pm.
