CCFL – round 2
KEYSBOROUGH has had the plug pulled on its bright start to the season after going down to Cranbourne by 116 points at Casey Fields on Friday night.
The Burra were expected to put up a much better performance after their round one victory over Doveton, but were put to bed early by the Eagles and never recovered.
A fired-up Cranbourne exploded out of the blocks, kicking 7.5 to 0.1 in a dominant first stanza before extending its lead at each break. The wet conditions at Casey Fields did little to dampen the Eagles fire-power on a night when key-defender Stu Morrish played his 150th game.
Skipper Marc Holt kicked nine goals for the winners, including six in a magnificent third-quarter burst, while Michael Theodoridis backed up his round-one haul of seven, with another six. Recruit Tim Smith capitalised when the ball did hit the ground, kicking three in a quality display of front-and-centre footy.
The slippery conditions didn’t suit the Burra’s main strength, their height up forward, with Chris Bryan, Davor Rajic and Bryce Sutton all failing to trouble the scorers. The Burra did miss the imposing size and presence of centre-half-forward Tyson King, but his inclusion would have made little impact in the conditions.
Michael Downie, Glen Hawthorn and Geoff Humphreys continued their fine-form from round one, and Tim Werner, Richard Minney and Jayke Hopkins chipped in with a goal apiece, but that’s the end of the penny section for the Burra.
Bryan and his troops have a week off for Easter before welcoming a winless Pakenham to Rowley Allen Reserve on 26 April.
SFL Division 2 – round 1
A narrow victory for Springvale Districts started the SFL Division 2 season in the best fashion.
Districts had led most of the match against Oakleigh before the home side charged back into the match with a four-goal final term. Springvale Districts was able to hold on as inaccuracy cost Oakleigh with its 10.13 not enough to surmount Springvale’s 11.11.
The best Demon was Dylan Bramble – jagging four goals in a man of the match performance – while Daniel Wilson and Ryan Wachter (two goals) also starred in the win.
Springvale Districts face Skye at home on 26 April.
SFL Division 3 – round 2
LYNDALE can flex its assertion as Greater Dandenong’s best team in Division 3 after knocking off the Redlegs 13.10 (88) to 5.6 (36). The Pumas kept the Redlegs scoreless in the last quarter while best afield Brad Carroll stormed home with five goals. For Dandenong, Brodie O’Laughlin, David Barrie and Dale Jose were best.
It’s not getting any easier for Sandown this season with a 5.8 (38) to 15.12 (102) thumping doled out by Carrum Patterson Lakes.
Trevor March lived up to his name as he marched over the Cobras’ defence en route to nine goals.
Sandown’s best on a lacklustre day were Dan Macklin, Mitch McGovern and Brad Reiner.
