SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Division 3 – round 18

SANDOWN has leapt over Lyndale to secure the SFL Division 3 second chance.
The Cobras skyrocketed from fifth to third in the last three weeks with beatings of Ashwood, Hallam and on Saturday – Black Rock.
The Jets looked feeble against the might of Sandown in a 97-point crushing. The Jets – already destined to make finals before this weekend – showed it was a step below the front-runners as Clint Sheedy posted seven majors.
Joining Sheedy up forward, Frank Martinicchio (5 goals) and Jason Toan (3 goals) had a superb outing against the Jets. Daniel Macklin and Jake Chapman also impressed through the centre.
The Cobras earned a qualifying-final against Carrum Patterson Lakes on Saturday at Heatherton’s Ross Street Reserve.
Lyndale will rue its finish to the regular season as the premiership contenders Mount Waverley pummelled the Pumas by 61 points.
The Pumas flew out of the starters’ blocks to kick seven goals to two in the first quarter – as Dale Tormey (2 goals) and the other Lyndale attackers started to crush the Mountain Lions.
The second term saw the beginning of the Mount Waverley juggernaut waking – kicking six goals and starting to feed SFL leading-goal-kicker James Gough.
Gough would finish with seven as Lyndale failed to match pace and kicked a miserable one-goal-nine after quarter time.
Lyndale enters the repechage and faces Black Rock in an elimination final at Ross Street Reserve, Heatherton on Sunday from 2.15pm.
Dandenong finished its season on a bright note, with a 94-point demolition of Endeavour Hills. Brodie O’Loughlin had a feast up forward – snagging seven goals – while Warren Kairns, Scott Murphy and Cameron Riley were the starring Redlegs. Dandenong finishes the season eighth out of the 10 SFL Division 3 teams.
Division 2 – round 17
THE Newcomen Road faithful farewelled club legend Gavin Vassallo with a rousing 10-point victory over Caulfield.
Vassallo, a champion midfielder at Noble Park and Springvale Districts, turned it on at home to register yet another best-on-field effort in the Demons’ 9.11 (65) to 7.13 (55) triumph.
The Districts led throughout the clash and kept chipping away at the Bears’ defences with Clinton Brooks, David Ford and Vassallo potting two apiece.
Daniel Wilson also featured in the best afield – as shaving off his beloved beard seemed to pay big dividends on field in a Samson reversal. Springvale Districts says farewell to Vassallo and the 2014 season on Saturday against Moorabbin at Widdop Crescent Reserve.
