MAMILS were out in force last Saturday as Southern Masters Cycling Club (SMCC) took to Casey Fields Criterium.
That’s not a misspelling – Middle Aged Men in Lycra (MAMIL), and in certain instances MAWILs, went lap for lap around the criterium as part of the club’s Casey Cycling Carnival.
The region’s only all-age cycling club showed that while the follicles had greyed, the attitude and intent of the riders certainly hasn’t mellowed as the riders flew out the gates en route to an hour’s worth of frenetic racing.
A Grade’s Brad Daly stormed home to victory after a sensational breakaway, beating Damian Gill and Peter Galvin into the minor places, travelling at an average speed of 42km per hour, while B Grade was clinched by John Chipp and C Grade went to Nicky St Clair.
The club also gets into Thursday night racing at Sandown Racecourse from 6.05pm.
The Cycling Victoria Para- State Championships Time Trial was also held on Saturday with Kaitlyn Schurmann, Gabriel Bouris, Carol Cooke, Michael Taylor, Massie Knight and Hannah MacDougall clinching gold.
