THEFTS from cars, home burglaries and property damage are the biggest challenges facing Greater Dandenong police.
Inspector Bruce Kitchen said these were the main issues driving up crime across the Police Service Area (PSA) and urged the community to help turn the tide.
He said police had proactive strategies in place to target thefts from vehicles, but asked residents to lock their doors and park their car in a safe place, preferably on their property or at least under a streetlight.
Insp Kitchen said most thefts happened in residential areas.
“It’s hard for us to target,” he said.
Insp Kitchen urged motorists to remove valuables from their vehicles at sports and shopping venues.
“The main stuff they’re getting is small change,” he said.
But the thieves are opportunistic and will take laptops, phones, wallets and more.
Insp Kitchen said residential burglaries were an ongoing problem but locking doors, installing an alarm or even buying a dog could discourage thieves.
He urged neighbours who noted suspicious people or cars to call police, take a photo or take down a description whenever safe.
“Don’t put yourself in danger,” he said.
Insp Kitchen said the Safe Suburbs Taskforce was targeting property damage in and around the business and shopping area, but again urged residents to report any suspicious activity.
