Plates blitz

POLICE nabbed more than 39 drivers during a number-plate sting on the Dandenong Bypass.
They ran the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) operation on 6 November alongside the Sheriff’s office and VicRoads.
Police uncovered stolen cars and registration plates, drivers behind the wheel while suspended and unlicensed, unregistered cars and an unaccompanied learner driver.
VicRoads officers found an unregistered truck and picked up 11 defects while Sheriff’s officers spoke to 95 drivers regarding outstanding fines and seized a number of vehicles.
Dandenong Police Inspector Bruce Kitchen said about one in 20 vehicles intercepted during the operation were “of interest” and Victoria Police had four new ANPR vehicles ready to hit the road.
“The chances of being detected by an ANPR vehicle is increasing all the time,” he said.
Insp Kitchen warned drivers to ensure their vehicle, licence and fine payments were in order.
