SPRINGVALE’S Cassandra Lim has captured music on canvas.
The 18-year-old’s artwork Symphony Series is on display in the Top Arts exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria.
It features outstanding work from 49 VCE graduates who last year completed Art or Studio Arts studies.
“I was really, really, really happy,” Cassandra said.
“I was really surprised as well. I’ve been to Top Arts twice and I didn’t expect my work to be shortlisted and exhibited.”
She created the four-canvas artwork during studies at Haileybury College in Keysborough.
“I was inspired my own experience as a classical musician,” she said.
“I really enjoy music and wanted to portray that in a visual way.
“The four canvases pretty much are expressing music and the emotion it conveys.”
Cassandra said her Studio Art studies started with exploration.
“You start off with a topic so I started off with music, and pretty much went from the first idea and used colour and texture throughout the term to create my end result,” she said.
“I really like playing with colour and texture and the abstract senses.
“That’s how I got to my final endpoint.”
She said it was a little nerve-wracking to know so many people would be viewing her work.
“At school, I’d received compliments but when there’s so many people there’s going to be a few people that don’t like your work,” she said.
“I guess that’s part of the journey.”
Cassandra is studying Engineering and Commerce at Monash University but continuing with art as a hobby, hoping more of her work will grace gallery walls in the future.
“Hopefully if I get a chance I’ll find some time to do further learning on art,” she said.
“But as of right now it’s just a hobby and it’s a really fun hobby. Whenever I get the time I just paint or draw.”
Top Arts is on display until 20 July and entry is free.
