Friendly eyes on the neighbourhood

By CASEY NEILL

GREATER Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch needs fresh eyes and ears to help keep the community safe.
President Dawn Vernon is calling on people from across the municipality – especially Keysborough’s new estates – to sign up to protect themselves and their neighbours.
The 70-year-old and her husband Reg compile and distribute a regular newsletter, run a Facebook page and organise information nights.
Their ageing support team is dwindling.
“I have had so many people this year get seriously ill so they cannot help anymore,” Ms Vernon said.
They’re seeking community-minded people to lend a hand.
“This is an opportunity to get involved and make a difference,” she said.
“Your participation is strictly voluntary and you can donate as much or as little time as you are able.
“There’s a whole lot of roles and even if it’s only a couple of hours a year, every bit helps.”
The group will hold an information night at Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough this Wednesday 22 July at 7.45pm.
Police and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers will speak about crime prevention and safety.
Neighbourhood Watch Victoria president Michael Strong will speak at a public forum at Noble Park’s Paddy O’Donoghue Centre from 7.30pm to 9pm on Wednesday 16 September.
He’s been a barrister, crown prosecutor, County Court judge, deputy president of Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), Office of Police Integrity director, Australian Crime Commission examiner, Phoenix Australia Centre for Post-traumatic Mental Health chairman, and Odyssey House board member.
Mr Strong will speak about crime and punishment in Victoria.
“Neighbourhood Watch is a great way to connect with your community and assist Victoria Police to keep it safe for all,” Ms Vernon said.
Call 0407 325 030 or email president@nhwgreaterdandenong.org for more information or to get involved.
