A RESIDENT was considered lucky to have survived a fire at a Noble Park house that didn’t have a working smoke alarm.
About 40 firefighters helped save the house after a garage fire spread to the home’s roof in Ardgower Road about 3am.
The blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes.
Dandenong Senior Station Officer Darren Padgett said the owner had escaped after hearing the crackle of the fire.
“This was extremely lucky, especially given how noisy it was last night from the gusty wind.
“Only working smoke alarms save lives. Especially at this time of night, a working smoke alarm is vital to ensure to wake up in the event of a fire.”
Mr Padgett said the garage was well alight when firefighters arrived.
“There was a considerable amount of clutter inside, including flammables.
“Firefighters were forced to smash tiles off the roof to access the fire and quickly discovered there was further clutter inside fuelling the flames.”
