Liquor sales at new Aldi

A new Aldi supermarket is under construction in Springvale and will include a liquor section.
Greater Dandenong councillors approved an application for a licence to sell packaged liquor at the 754-768 Princes Highway site at their Monday 14 November meeting.
The liquor section will be within the supermarket and will only trade during supermarket opening hours.
It will be 21.4 square metres, or 1.3 per cent of the overall supermarket floor area, which is consistent with other Aldi stores in Victoria.
The council report on the application said the permit was not expected to result in a detrimental effect on the surrounding area.
“Conditions of the permit, if issued, will ensure the proposal is appropriately controlled and maintained,” it said.
“An alcohol management plan was prepared and submitted with the application.”
The report said the development could drive economic activity and employment and that the council received no objections to the application.
The Aldi store will be in part of the former Bunnings building.
The Journal asked Aldi when the supermarket would open and roughly how many people it would employ.
An Aldi Australia spokeswoman provided a response that didn’t answer either question.
“As we expand we will continue to look for new opportunities to bring the Aldi difference to more Australians,” her statement said.
“We plan to open 25 stores a year on the eastern seaboard in the coming years and up to 120 stores across south and western Australia as part of our long-term expansion.
“We look forward to helping even more Australians discover the benefits Aldi can bring to their wallets and lifestyles.”
Aldi is a leading global discount supermarket chain with almost 10,000 stores in 18 countries.
