Dandenong’s Greek Orthodox community hall is set to receive a long-awaited $300,000 facelift.
The refurbishment project which is still in the planning stages will see the 44-year-old building get an upgrade to its kitchen, audio-visual systems, foyer and toilet facilities.
On 11 October, the State Government announced a $150 000 Multicultural Community Infrastructure fund grant – which is matched dollar for dollar by the Greek Orthodox community.
“The hall which has been renovated twice already is tired, but we will be giving it a fresh modern
look”, Greek Orthodox Community of Dandenong and Districts president Steve Karamoschos said.
As a result, the hall for more than 1000 community members will become more accessible. This starts with the installation of inside toilets.
Some of the groups that will benefit from these changes are an elderly citizens club, Greek school
and community fellowship which occurs once a month.
“The grant will enable us to upgrade our community hall, providing better access to our members
and the Greater Dandenong community,” Mr Karamoschos said.
A new community soup kitchen may also be a possibility.
Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the grant.
“By working together with local multicultural communities, we can build a Dandenong where everyone belongs, feels accepted and can freely participate and contribute,” Ms Williams said.
