Dandenong Journal Your Say: Letters to the Editor

Re: Breastfeeding affront at cafe

Good on you, Kaylan. The cafe has no right to discriminate against you because you are breastfeeding your baby. It’s neither legal nor moral for them to do so. Congratulations on your courage in standing up for your baby’s right to have a breastfeed wherever and whenever he is hungry.

Well done Ms Ky for advocating for yourself, your baby and the women in your community. What a horrible experience for you, but so good that you are using it to make a positive contribution. Thanks too to the media for such a great in-depth look at the people involved.

Any chance we get to educate the general public that breastfeeding is neither obscene nor illegal is a positive opportunity, however horrible the original event. I would arm all new mothers with a business card clearly stating their rights and referring objectors to the appropriate legislation.

Re: Election over: eight returned, three newcomers to council

During election campaign, residents found in their letter box ‘appeal leaflets’ in Vietnamese calling for the unseating of those councillors — Chea, Brown and Blades — who voted against the naming of a Springvale square as Saigon Plaza. In spite of this call, the results of the election shows that the three councillors were comfortably returned. So that really reflects what ‘the people want and decide’, doesn’t it?

Re: Push to end attendance voting

Let’s hope sense prevails and we can receive all information needed for making an election decision in one envelope along with the voting form. It will save time and be more cost effective. Those municipalities that already have postal voting had almost 100 per cent returns. Once again electors have been asking for postal voting for years and we have been ignored until now.

As one of the unsuccessful candidates, one of the biggest complaints I received from voters on the day was the fact that many simply didn’t know anything about who their candidates were this year, apart from the incumbents.

While each candidate operated their own marketing program in the lead-up to the election, often this doesn’t reach out to all the voters. With a postal vote, at least all voters would receive a document which outlines exactly who all their candidates are, what they stand for and any political parties or lobby groups they might be aligned with. It would certainly assist voters in making an informed decision.

Re: Asylum seeker’s daily worry

I know Kumar and a lot of the other seven you talk about. They are kind and gentle people and a real asset to Australia and their community of Dandenong. Please support them in any way you can and thank you from the bottom of my heart for printing a true story about refugees and what they face instead of the scaremongering that other papers seem to print.
