Ex-mayor Long seeking Greater Dandenong’s top job

By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

FRESH from her narrow re-election, Angela Long is standing for mayor at Wednesday’s councillor inauguration.

The councillor-elect, who was mayor in 2000, relied on preferences to grab the third vacancy ahead of Jill Walsh in Red Gum Ward in last month’s poll.

Ms Long said her priorities included over-seeing the Revitalising Central Dandenong project, the completion of the municipal building in central Dandenong, more youth programs and bigger headquarters for Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Operative.

The 11 councillors-elect , who met for an informal mayoral vote last Thursday, will vote for their mayor on Wednesday.

Having unsuccessfully run for mayor last year, Ms Long said she didn’t want to “get my hopes up” about the vote.

“From what I understand, Peter Brown is also putting his hand up and there could be others on the night.”

But Mr Brown, who contested Thursday’s ‘straw poll’ against Ms Long, ruled it out. “The majority of our colleagues supported Angela Long and I’d expect she will be elected uncontested.”
