DDCA: West bowlers in good nick

BOWL at the stumps and good things will happen – straight lines and a competitive bowling attack are proving the catalysts for Dandenong West’s excellent start to the DDCA turf 1 season.

The Bulls are within reach of their third win of the season, needing 60 runs to beat North Dandenong when play resumes at Lois Twohig Reserve this Saturday.

After losing the toss and being sent into the field, the Bulls’ quicks made the most of the early overs, having the North batsmen 5-48 before bowling them out for 113. Shane Clark (31) offered some lower-order resistance.

Matt Fielding had 3-3 from his 11 overs and Andrew Harry (2-17), Alex Roberts (2-34) and Ryan Buckley (2-34) were all impressive.

In reply, the Bulls ended play on 2-54 with Greg Siwes on 27 not out and Alex Roberts on nine not out. Roshan de Silva had 2-18 for North.

Bulls captain-coach Justin Stanton said his bowlers were leading the way. “Four or five of our dismissals were bowled and that comes from just attacking the stumps.

“We are lucky to have four genuine opening bowlers in the side, so from game to game we chop and change the openers. There is a little bit of competitiveness between the four and all of them are egging one another along.”

Stanton is hoping to push for the outright win if possible. “First and foremost we need to make the runs. Then if the weather is OK we will go for anything we can get after that.”

Buckley Ridges has set an impressive 8-258 for Berwick, with Ben Watson making 71 not out and Greg Todd 54. Ash Henry (3-65) and Ryan Hercules (2-29) led the way for the Bears.

Heinz Southern Districts is well placed against Doveton and needs 90 runs to win. The Doves were bowled out for 158 with Justin Davis (5-36) and leg-spinner Paul Stockdale (3-48) leading the way. HSD is 3-68 in reply with captain Trevor Davies on 44 not out.

Coomoora has set Narre Warren a tough task with 8-275. Paul Hill led the Roos with 49 and Nathan King took 5-100 for the Magpies.

Parkfield has bounced back from a poor batting display to have Hallam Kalora Park on the ropes at 7-42 chasing the Bears’ 149 all out.

Sri Lankan star Jeevantha Kulatunga is 46 not out for Springvale South in its chase against Mordialloc. The Bloods were at 6-117 at stumps chasing Mordi’s 194 all out. Dillon Fernandesz took 5-37 for the Bloods.

■ Buckley Ridges will host RDCA club Bayswater Park in the next round of Cricket Victoria’s Statewide Twenty20 Cup after beating Berwick in the south metro region playoff last week.

Ridges kept Berwick to 6-131 from its 20 overs before making 2-134 from 14.1 overs to win. The date for the clash with Bayswater Park is yet to be decided.
