Big hearted: Dandenong identity Reg Coldwell

By MARG STORK

OBITUARY Reginald Thomas (Reg) Coldwell: March 9, 1949-October 29, 2012

“A LITTLE man with a big heart” — these were among the words used to describe Reginald Coldwell, a well-known Greater Dandenong identity.

Mr Coldwell, 63, who lived in Noble Park, died of a heart attack late last year. He had cared for gardens at homes of residents in the City of Greater Dandenong and environs, in some instances, for 25 years.

The popular landscape gardener and racing car driver was generous and kind, affectionately known by the nickname ‘Glovebox’.

Mr Coldwell was a member of the Gippsland Car Club and raced his cars at the Sandown Park track, as well as at Phillip Island.

He was born at the Mooroopna Hospital, the son of Ronald Thomas and Nancy Eileen Coldwell. His school days were spent at Harcourt, near Castlemaine, and, as a young man, he joined the Royal Australian Navy, serving for 20 years. One of the boats he served on was anchored offshore during the Vietnam War.

Mr Coldwell purchased his home in Heyington Crescent, Noble Park, where his friendly, pleasant nature made him popular with his neighbours.

Of a family of four boys, Mr Coldwell’s surviving brothers are Leslie, who has lived in Mildura for 26 years, and David, of Perth.

Le Pine Funeral Services of Dandenong were in charge of the funeral at the Bunurong cemetery chapel, Carrum Downs, in November and a civil celebrant, Pastor Gavan Grosser, officiated.
