Finals at Gaelic Park

GAELIC football and hurling will be featured at Keysborough this Sunday, with the finals of the ‘knockout’ competition at Gaelic Park.
The competition has been going for three weeks and culminates with finals in men’s and women’s football and hurling starting at 11am.
The women’s final is a replay of last year’s championship final between traditional rivals Garryowen and Sinn Fein.
In the men’s football final, Garryowen will take on Padraig Pearses, while in hurling, the Melbourne Shamrocks meet Garryowen for the Knockout Cup.
For the first time, a junior knockout final will be held in the women’s competition, giving the two best teams who did not make the senior final a chance to play for a trophy.
Gaelic football is a fast-growing sport in Australia, attracting not only Irish players but sportspeople from a variety of other football codes.
It’s a quick and exciting game that uses similar skills to Australian Rules Football, but with a round ball and some challenging rules.
The traditional Irish sport of hurling is considered to be one of the world’s fastest games, making it a spectacle to watch.
Players use a carved wooden stick called a hurley to ‘puck’ a small leather ball around the pitch.
Gaelic Park is at 324-334 Perry Road, Keysborough. For more information call GAA Victoria vice-president Georgia Spokes on 0418 502 507.
