Shed open for men’s business

By Shaun Inguanzo
COMMUNITY Services minister Lisa Neville officially opened the revamped Keysborough Learning Centre last Friday.
The neighbourhood house features the groundbreaking Men’s Shed handyman program that is designed to provide an educational and social outlet for men.
As part of the $337,000 of renovations and upgrades, the centre built a shed that was specifically designed for use by the Men’s Shed participants.
On Friday 2 August, Men’s Shed participants, Keysborough Learning Centre staff, and State Government figures including Ms Neville officially opened the new shed and centre facilities.
Keysborough Learning Centre manager Denis Minogue said the revamp cost $337,000, with the Department of Victorian Communities pitching in $75,000.
“The new facilities include a reception area with public Internet access, podiatry and food bank,” he said.
“And there is a new classroom with a kitchen.
“The most outstanding feature though is the new Men’s Shed.
“The shed program began in July 2004 as a double garage.
“The new shed is six times larger and will be the centre for a number of new programs including horticulture, cooking, health and fitness.”
The shed will be named the Keysmen Shed, which is the name given exclusively to the Keysborough Men’s Shed group.
Mr Minogue said a DVD promoting the benefits of the Men’s Shed program was launched on the day.
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea and Lyndhurst MP Tim Holding were also present.
