Trams take to CBD tracks

DANDENONG-BUILT trams hit new tracks in Melbourne last week.
Bombardier’s E-Class trams started running on Route 11 between West Preston and Docklands, the first time they’ve ventured outside Route 96.
The E-Class trams are 33 metres long and can carry more than 200 people – Melbourne’s biggest trams.
They have a low-floor design, wide doorways and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs, scooters and prams.
Bombardier Transportation Australia managing director Rene Lalande said expanding the E-Class tram to Route 11 would enable more passengers to “enjoy the quality and comfort of the best tram ever built in, and for, Melbourne”.
“At Bombardier, we are very pleased to see our locally made tram contribute to improving mobility in our city,“ he said.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the former Labor State Government ordered 50 E-Class trams from Bombardier and the new government this year ordered another 20.
“They are the biggest, safest and most accessible trams on our network, and more and more people will get to enjoy them over the coming years as they come off the production line in Dandenong and into service,” she said.
