All quiet on the sky rail front

ELEVATED rail will reduce train noise in Noble Park and other suburbs, according to a new report.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan released the Level Crossing Removal Authority’s preliminary noise report for the Cranbourne to Pakenham Level Crossing Removal Project on Wednesday 4 May.
She said the report showed that every feature of the new line – stations, track, wheels and horns – would be quieter than the current rail line.
Adding noise and privacy screening and directly fixing the track to the structure using continuously welded rail will have a big impact on reducing noise, Ms Allan said.
The report also makes clear, she said, that the noise modelling used was deliberately conservative, meaning the actual noise effects were likely to be even lower.
The report’s release followed work starting on the $1.6 billion project on 1 May.
