Six things to do over the school holidays


Avast, me hearties!

Keysborough resident Alesia, 4, put on her best pirate outfit and practiced her “arr” ahead of this free Talk Like a Pirate Day event.
There’ll be a treasure hunt, competitions, bouncy castle, pirate, balloon-making, face painting and more.

Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival

This two-week Under the Sea themed celebration for the young and young at heart will run throughout the school holidays. There’ll be live performances, sea-themed workshops, shows at Drum Theatre, daily movie screenings in Harmony Square and more. Headline event Little Day Out – For Big Imaginations will be held at Ross Reserve, Noble Park, from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 25 September.

Green living

Learn how to reduce waste and live a greener lifestyle. Morning tea will be provided and a lucky door prize will be up for grabs.

  • Noble Park Community Centre, Ross Reserve, Noble Park. Saturday 17 September, 10am to noon. Places are limited and bookings are essential. Call 8571 1702 to register.


Free movie screenings

Bring a blanket or seat and a picnic to free screenings of SpongeBob movie Sponge out of Water and Ponyo.

  • Harmony Square, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong. Saturday 17 September, at noon, and Sunday 18 September, at noon.


Rado art prize

Ron Rado established highly-successful road construction and maintenance business, Standard Roads, and in his later years developed a passion for the visual arts. This annual art prize features works by students from Chisholm Institute.

  • Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, corner Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong. Until Saturday 1 October. Weekdays 11am to 5pm and Saturdays 11am to 3pm.

Full Moon Festival

This event celebrates the brightest and fullest moon, a traditional Chinese custom that symbolises peace, prosperity and family reunion.
It will feature moon cakes, lanterns, lion dancing and food.

  • The terrace, Dandenong Market, corner Clow and Cleeland streets, Dandenong. Sunday 18 September, 10am to 4pm.
