Despite appearances, Book Week wasn’t just about dress-ups at Noble Park Secondary College.
Staff and students inhabited their favourite book characters to acknowledge the power of books in their lives, English teacher Barbara Smith said.
“Reading is about learning, about dreaming and about finding ways to understand the world and your place in the world.”
As part of Book Week on 20-24 August, reading hubs were set up in classrooms, pancake breakfasts supped and treasure hunts explored.
There’s a concerted push to improve literacy and set a ‘reading culture’ at the college.
One part of that are regular reading sessions for students to enjoy books of their choice.
“Choosing what you read is important as it motivates students to read,” Ms Smith said.
In a sense, every week had become a Book Week, she said.
Principal Pam Dyson added: “It is heartwarming to see our students excited to choose books from a range of levels that empower them to take a journey into another world as they embrace their love of reading.“
