Grants for memorials

APPLICATIONS for the Restoring Community War Memorials Grant Programs are now open.
Groups that are eligible to apply for the grants program are Victorian ex-service organisations, local councils, schools and community groups.
The grants provide funding of up to $10,000 to support ex-service organisations and other community groups to preserve, restore and enhance local war memorials.
South Eastern Metropolitan MP Gordon Rich-Phillips encouraged Greater Dandenong community organisations to apply for the Restoring Community War Memorials Grants Program 2010-2011 and show local veterans how appreciated they are.
“Community groups making use of the grant to preserve and enhance war memorials allows future generations to have a better understanding of Australia’s military history and to remember the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives for our nation,” he said.
“Our war memorials and honour rolls should be celebrated because they play an important part in explaining who we are and the contribution Greater Dandenong locals made in defending Australia.
“The grant money can be used to repair broken statues, rectify sinking foundations, re-lettering honour rolls, and installing additional plaques and explanatory walls to provide a historical context about the memorial and its place in the community.”
Applications close on 31 January 2011 and further information is available at www.veterans.vic.gov.au or by contacting 1300 366 356.
