City adopts charter

THE City of Greater Dandenong is the first Victorian council to adopt the Charter of Human Rights into its workplace policy.
The Victorian Charter of Human Rights outlines basic rights including freedom of expression, a right to life, and protection from cruel or inhumane treatment.
“Council has already commenced a review of current workplace policies including equal opportunity, harassment free workplace and prevention of workplace bullying and violence,” a council spokesman said this week.
“Principles from the Victorian Charter of Human Rights will be incorporated into these guidelines.”
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said he was delighted that Greater Dandenong would become the first council in the state to take this step.
“The council is fully committed to ensuring it continues to implement best practice workplace initiatives,” Cr Chea said.
“Everyone deserves to have their rights protected and be afforded respect and dignity in the workplace.
“These values are emphasised in the Victorian Charter of Human Rights.
“The initiative will be launched this month by Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission chief executive Dr Helen Szoke.”
