Program tells migrants’ stories

A DVD documenting the extraordinary stories of five Sudanese migrants was launched in Dandenong this week.
The South Eastern Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) has implemented a Multicultural Creative Arts Program funded by the City of Greater Dandenong council.
The program allows young refugees the chance to express themselves creatively, offering therapeutic value to those who have arrived from strife-torn nations.
The documentary of five Sudanese young women details their travels to Australia, the experiences of life as a refugee and the challenges faced during their extraordinary journeys from one country to another.
MRC youth team leader Nancy Badr said the project was empowering to the women.
“The young women found this a very positive experience as they all had very similar, yet different stories to share,” she said.
“The film gave the opportunity to the young women to express their identity, individuality and their view on the world. The young women embraced this process as they are often feel they are denied the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings at home, at school or in the wider community.”
MRC CEO Jenny Semple described the DVD as moving and said it was a must-watch for all Australians.
