TAMMY van Wisse can often be seen at the tail of a nightly news bulletin, having swum across one of many bodies of water around Australia.
The marathon swimmer, who resides in Springvale, has swum more than 60,000 kilometres in her lifetime, or 1.5 times the circumference of the world.
Tammy told the Star she was excited to be carrying the Queen’s Baton on this Thursday’s (2 March) Dandenong leg, but wished she could swim with it instead.
“I would like to take the baton for a detour swim,” she admitted, laughing.
“The adrenalin is pumping, I am really excited, I just hope my running skills come close to my swimming skills.
“I would have been able to give it an initiation in the water which would have been much easier for me.”
A long-time Springvale resident, Tammy part-owns the Paul Saddler Swim Centre which has branches in Hampton Park and Narre Warren.
She confessed that Springvale was dear to her heart, and she often swims at the nearby Noble Park Heated Swim Centre to keep in shape for her marathon swims.
“I love Springvale,” she said, “I love the Vietnamese food and I love shopping in Springvale with the fresh vegies and produce around.”
But don’t confuse her with friendly rival Susie Moroney.
“We are rivals,” she giggled, “I am always trying to organise a contest between the two of us.”
Tammy said she would be the last runner in the Phillip Island to Frankston leg.
