SPRINGVALE North kept its finals aspirations alive in Tennis Victoria Pennant Grade One on Saturday with a narrow victory over Gladstone Park.
After straight sets victories to Zoran Josic (7-5 6-4) and Stephen Sruk (6-2 6-2), Springvale North looked destined to establish an unassailable lead, but a loss to Henryk Pawlukowski (3-6 3-6) put the onus on young gun Trent Cobb to seal the singles tie.
Cobb lost the first 3-6, but was able to reverse that score in the second set before play was abandoned due to light with the score 4-4 in the third.
The halved rubber was enough to hand Springvale North an important victory in the away tie.
The Grade One debutants are now sitting in fourth place in their section ahead of this Saturday’s doubles tie against fifth-placed Coatesville at Furnew Street.
