Anti-logging crusade ‘a success’

THE Melbourne Water Catchment Network (MWCN) has declared its Dandenong council election campaign against logging in Melbourne’s water catchments a success.
MWCN spokesman Simon Birrell said he was pleased with the result, following his group’s attack on council candidates who voted against a motion to support the end to logging.
“The majority of councillors on the new Dandenong council have publicly stated that they will support a ban on logging in water catchments,” Mr Birrell said. “The MWCN welcomes the fact that some re-elected councillors changed their stand by publicly stating that during the election campaign they would support the resolution as long as there were no job losses in Dandenong.”
In the week before the election the environmental group changed its advertisement to focus on Water Minister Tim Holding.
“The residents of Dandenong have indicated to us that we should lobby Minister Holding as they believe he should represent their need for water security in the future,” Mr Birrell said.
