Speeding is a big laugh

A SPRINGVALE South man laughed at police after he and another man were clocked driving almost 100 kilometres over the speed limit on the weekend.
Whitehorse Traffic Management Unit police impounded the two cars on Saturday morning (16 January) after they were caught racing in Vermont South.
Police were notified shortly after midnight of a Toyota Supra and a Honda Integra travelling at high speeds, through red lights and cutting through traffic on the Burwood Highway between Morack Road and Springvale Road.
Both vehicles, being driven by P-platers were detected travelling at 170 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone.
Police said the 18-year-old driver of the Toyota, who had only had his licence for six months, seemed to think the whole thing was amusing and smirked and laughed as police spoke to him.
The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old from Springvale South, was driving with a suspended licence.
Both vehicles were impounded for 48 hours.
The men are expected to be charged on summons in relation to exceeding the speed limit, speed dangerous, manner dangerous, evading police, disobeying traffic lights, engaging in street racing, and other traffic offences.
Acting Sergeant Aaron Gribble from Whitehorse Traffic Management Unit said he was thankful no-one was injured but hoped drivers would have more care on the roads.
“The speed at which these boys were travelling and their lack of respect for other people’s lives on the roads is shocking,” he said.
“I continually shake my head and wonder when will the message get through? Slow down, it’s not that hard.”
