Students in a race to learn

YOUNG residents of Greater Dandenong will learn more about their surroundings when they race around the city next month.
Secondary school students will have an opportunity to test their navigation skills when they participate in Race around the Community.
The event is a chance for young people to make their way around the local public transport system, while also learning about the programs, services and opportunities available within their community.
Teams will be given public transport tickets, timetables and maps and will visit as many youth services and agencies as possible, where they will be asked to complete tasks, speak to workers and collect items to gain points.
All teams must visit at least one organisation in Noble Park, Springvale and Dandenong – and must make use of the public transport system.
Youth Services co-ordinator Katharina Verscharen said Race around the Community was a fun way for young people to learn about the local services available to them.
“Greater Dandenong offers some fantastic opportunities for young people, but sadly not all young people know about them,” she said.
“By participating in Race around the Community, young people have the chance to expand their horizons and learn more about the great things being done in their city.”
The race is being held on Wednesday 13 October and will begin at The Castle in Dandenong at 9am. The race will also finish at The Castle.
