Helping mums hit the books

YOUNG mothers can now complete a mainstream education in the Greater Dandenong region.
Mission Australia, Hallam Senior Secondary College and South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) have joined forces to create the Aim’n High program.
Mission Australia child and family services manager Melinda Chapman said the program would offer childcare while assisting mothers aged between 16 and 19 with their education.
“It’s challenging to be a first-time mum, regardless of facing the demands of study as well,” Ms Chapman said.
“This program will make a significant difference to young mothers’ education outcomes and so address issues such as disadvantage and disengagement.”
It is able to accept up to 20 students, who will be taught VCE level English and Human Development by Hallam Secondary College teachers.
The program is held at Mission Australia’s Early Learning Service at 24-26 Liquid Amber Street, Doveton. To enrol or to find out more information call the South East Youth Connections program on 1800 335 106.
