KIDS can get active and healthy at a new Noble Park program to help them manage their weight.
The free Mind, Exercise, Nutrition … Do it! (MEND) Healthy Kids Program is a lifestyle course aimed at helping overweight children aged 7 to 13 and their families.
MEND starts at Noble Park Aquatic Centre on 31 January and will run from 4pm to 6pm each Thursday for 10 weeks.
It helps families with their eating and exercise habits to improve their children’s fitness, physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem.
Places on the course worth up to $800 per child are being offered free to the first 15 who sign up.
MEND uses a practical, interactive learning approach to teach children and parents weight management skills rather than focusing on weight loss.
This includes inspiring families to adopt a healthier lifestyle and enjoy preparing and eating healthy foods, reading food labels and healthy shopping on a budget.
Sessions also focus on making exercise fun again, especially for children who are not fans of traditional school sports.
MEND program manager at Noble Park Sarah Fradley said the program could change lives.
“We offer a friendly relaxed atmosphere to encourage children to give new things a go and show parents how they can be supportive and involve the whole family in making healthier choices and following an active lifestyle,” she said.
“Children become healthier and fitter while their self-esteem and confidence increase greatly.”
Families interested in participating should contact Ms Fradley on 1300 822 953 or SMS their name to 0409 745 645 for a call back. A parent or carer must accompany each child to every session.
