Demons drive it home

By JARROD POTTER

SPRINGVALE Districts pushed into the top four in Southern Football League Division 2 with a comfortable 48-point win over Murrumbeena.
The Demons stifled the Lions run in the second quarter, keeping the visitors scoreless as Rob Johnston (five goals), Adam Nichols (three) and Paul Norman (three) all hit the scoreboard. Six goals to three in the third term put the margin beyond reproach as Springvale Districts claimed a 15.6 (98) win to double the wayward Murrumbeena 5.18 (48). Nichols and Damien Stoter-Rainer were best afield.
In SFL Division 3, LYNDALE continued its push up the ladder with a strong showing against top of the table Doveton Eagles. Going toe-to-toe with one of this season’s favourites, the Panthers headed off the Wilson-trio attack for as long as feasible, before Nathan (five goals) and Corrie (four) iced the match. The Eagles ran out 37-point winners, but Lyndale had plenty of positives with Trevor Kumetaitis bagging four goals while Damien Wilsnach and Matt Stuart were named best on.
DANDENONG was tested by newcomers Carrum Patterson Lakes, but the Redlegs came from behind to claim the points in a 12-point triumph. Matt Van Schajik kicked three while Chris Hatfield and Dylan Bracebridge were also in the best.
SANDOWN thumped Hallam 24.21 (165) to 7.11 (53) in a gallant effort from the SFL’s next to newest team. Shane Adams had a field-day against the Hawks defence jagging eight goals, with Mitch Gersbeck and John Frenken (three) getting among the goals. Dwayne Doig proved exceptional for the Cobras as was Jason Toan.
VAFA
St John’s claimed a 27-point win over Yarra Valley with Rohan Scott and Daniel Batson kicking four goals each. Liam Mara and Daniel Cattolico were among the best.
VWFL
Keysborough and St John’s had convincing wins in the VWFL South East Division, with the Dandenong-area teams squaring off for early bragging rights this weekend for top spot. Keysborough claimed a 166-0 victory over Hallam, with Roslyn Hubeek and Natalie Cardomone kicking five goals each, while St John’s hit up a 11.18 (84) to 2.4 (16) over Whitehorse, with Kerry Trevillian kicking five while Brownyn Rogan best on field. The St John’s v Keysborough match starts at noon at Thomas Carroll Reserve on Sunday.
