RANGERS women showed the men how a road-trip should pan out – snaring a nail-biting 60-59 SEABL victory over the top-of-the-ladder Bendigo Braves while the Rangers’ men were left to ponder what if with a 77-92 loss to Bendigo.
Regaining his young Victorian/Australian representative Lauren Scherf (eight points, six rebounds) – Rangers’ coach Paul Flynn was able to position his players around the rising star for 14 extremely effective minutes.
Nothing split the teams at the half – going in at 27-apiece.
Also standing up in her usual manner were All-Star shoe-in and MVP contender Amelia Todhunter (21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists) – whose numbers this year have improved to 18.2 points per game and 6.8 rebounds – up from 11.6 and 4.8 respectively in 2012.
Tenaya Phillips hit 10 points and accrued five rebounds into another show of signs to come for the former AIS representative.
The Rangers’ women snared their chances when the game was on the line – going ahead with a couple of long-range buckets via Aimie Clydesdale (eight points, three assists) to push ahead and holding on for the one-point win.
Dandenong holds onto second place in the SEABL East, chasing only Bendigo.
The Rangers’ men couldn’t keep the winning ways going – falling 15 points behind the Braves.
A strong third quarter, reaping 28 points, wasn’t replicated otherwise as Dandenong fell behind at the other breaks.
Daequon Montreal (20 points, seven rebounds) was left to burden the majority of the work while Tony Lewis (14 points, eight rebounds) and Andrew Harms (12 points, five assists) rounded out the reliable-Ranger ranks.
Last year’s SEABL men’s runners-up falls to third in the SEABL East with a 6-6 record.
The Rangers head to Ballarat to face the Miners in a double-header from 6pm.
