THE only thing Parkmore Pirates Youth Girls football team really needs to work on is learning the club song.
The Royal Blues were sensational in their South East Juniors Youth Girls debut last week – an amazing feat considering they were short on numbers and only a handful of their squad had ever played football before.
On a freezing Saturday morning at Fountain Gate’s Max Pawsey Reserve, the Pirates exceeded all expectations as they ran up the scoreboard and got to belt out the club song for the first time after a 58-point win over Tooradin-Dalmore.
A five-goal opening term set the tempo for the Pirates as the hail, driving rain and gale-force winds buffeted the south-east.

April Lega-Frost showed she’s a natural at the code, slotting six goals on debut, while Charis Ulu Peniata was prominent in a free-flowing midfield role.
While the girls didn’t know all the words to the theme, the Pirates still savoured the impressive 11.4 (70) to 2.0 (12) triumph.
With few experienced players, coach Michael Sheahan was extremely impressed with his fledgling football side and the way they’ve taken to the sport.
It was very nice – it’s a good job by the girls in the first time they’ve played together,” Sheahan said.
“We’ve only got three that have played before and one of them isn’t playing today, so we’re very pleased with what they’ve done.”
With a pair of Vic Metro reps out of the side and star Stingray Karina Diaz sidelined, chances are the Pirates are set to soar even further in its first South East Juniors campaign.
The side has 15 girls in the squad and have plenty more opportunities for young women aged 13 to 18 to play local female football.
Sheahan encouraged anyone in the Greater Dandenong area who was interested in football to come along and give playing for Parkmore Pirates a chance.
“Come down – give it a go – we’re here for fun and we’re a club that just wants to give people a go,” Sheahan said. “We’ve got a girl here who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy and we just give everyone a go – so just have a crack.”
