KEYSBOROUGH tennis star Azra Hadzic earned her first major tournament victory of the season, winning the Cairns International.
Hadzic, 18, headed into the tournament as the number-two seed, Hadzic worked her way through the seeds one-by-one.
Easily besting the fifth seed Sally Peers in a 6-2 6-3 quarter final win, Hadzic had a bit more work on her hands to best New Zealand’s Dianne Hollands – besting her in 6-3 7-5.
It booked her spot in the final against the fourth seed Jessica Moore – who bested the number one ranked Zuzana Zlochnova in the other semi-final 6-2 3-6 6-2.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic against the Western Australian – with Hadzic claiming the first set 6-3 before Moore fought back to level the ledger with a 3-6 second set.
Moore couldn’t hold off the rampaging Hadzic, with the Keysborough champion earning the championship with a 6-2 third set.
The win boosts Hadzic’s Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking to 339 in the world.
Hadzic also played last season for the Doveton-based Waverley Warriors in the Asia-Pacific Tennis League.
