Market chairwoman sets out her stall

DANDENONG Market has shared the secrets to its success with market bosses from around the world.
Market chairwoman Julie Busch was invited to speak on 26 March at the ninth International Public Markets Conference in Barcelona.
She discussed the role Dandenong Market plays in creating jobs and business opportunities for emerging communities.
“The growth and prosperity of Dandenong has been closely linked to the success of the market from the earliest days,” she said last week.
“The market has been the cornerstone of bustling community life for almost 150 years – a place of employment and economic contribution, a place of community and shelter and, importantly, a beginning for so many different nationalities to become merchants and traders.”
Ms Busch shared a panel with representatives from the City of Torino in Italy, UN Women in Papua New Guinea, and the USA’s Marshall University.
Project for Public Spaces (PPS) presented the three-day conference with support from co-hosts UN Habitat and the Institut Municipal de Mercats de Barcelona.
Its focus was on new trends and innovations for preserving and revitalising public markets, and why markets were a cost-effective investment for cities.
The City of Greater Dandenong completed a $26 million redevelopment at Dandenong Market between 2005 and 2010.
“The City of Greater Dandenong has long supported and championed Dandenong Market,” Ms Busch said.
“The council continues to invest in building the market’s reputation as a local icon by supporting headline events at the market, including Dandenong World Fare and the Family Sustainability Festival.”
