OVER the past year, I have been spending a lot of time out and about at community events and festivals across the Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia regions.
Events I have attended include Ramadan, mosque openings and NAIDOC week celebrations. I am constantly amazed at the generosity that is offered and the manner in which everyone, irrespective of who they are or where they come from, is welcomed.
This often makes me reflect on what a great community I have the privilege to work amidst. For me, this openness and generosity comes from the fact that our community is so unbelievably diverse.
This diversity brings a richness and energy that I have never experienced before in many years of community policing. I think one of the most important parts is that, more often than not, we all get along incredibly well. This harmony is a credit to you all as it demonstrates to me that tolerance and respect are fundamental principles we’re all happy to live by. I’m not saying we’re perfect.
From time to time, I see reports of crimes and incidents that are motivated by prejudice, discrimination and racism. These crimes can take many forms and while some involve physical assault or damage to property, others involve verbal or written abuse. In whatever form, these crimes are very serious and should be reported to police.
This behaviour does not belong in our community.
Irrespective of the faith people practise or the clothes or attire they choose to wear, everyone has the right to feel safe, secure and respected in our community. I am aware that some members of our community may feel afraid to report this type of crime. I say to you that Victoria Police takes these reports very seriously.
We will make every effort to investigate them and hold those responsible accountable. No-one should be afraid to report a crime.

It is a duty, both as a community and as individuals, to do all we can to prevent and deter crime. I believe we can do it.
