BOMBARDIER’S Dandenong factory is leading the way in light rail.
Australasian Railway Association’s (ARA) Light Rail Conference and Exhibition delegates toured the site on 23 February as part of this year’s event.
Bombardier Transportation’s Australian managing director Rene Lalande led a journey through the design, engineering, manufacturing and servicing stages for Melbourne’s FLEXITY E-Class trams.
“Bombardier is Australia’s only manufacturer of light rail vehicles, delivering local products for local conditions,” he said.
“Light rail is an attractive and advantageous solution for Australia’s growing cities.
“It is a fast, clean and convenient transport mode proven to benefit citizens, local economies and the environment.”
Bombardier first introduced the FLEXITY E-Class trams onto the Melbourne light rail system in 2013 and has now delivered 32 of the original 50-tram order to operator Yarra Trams.
Last November, Bombardier signed on to supply Public Transport Victoria (PTV) with a further 20 trams.
More than 300 Australian suppliers are supporting Bombardier in building the Melbourne fleet, most of them based in Victoria.
