A Berwick man suffered dog bites during his arrest over a police chase from Knoxfield to Dandenong South, with a Brighton fuel-stop in between.
Police allege the 23-year-old was involved in an altercation with another motorist in Berwick about 11pm on Saturday 29 July.
About 1am the following morning, they spotted a vehicle with stolen number plates travelling at high speeds in Knoxfield and tried to intercept it.
They followed the car onto EastLink but backed off and let the police helicopter keep track.
Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Liam Comrie said the driver refuelled the vehicle at 7-Eleven on Bay Street, Brighton.
The driver allegedly made his way back onto Dandenong Road and police picked up the pursuit on the ground.
Officers deployed “stop sticks” – or tyre spikes – on Dandenong Road and brought the car to a halt.
Sen Const Comrie said the driver abandoned the vehicle and ran to Taylor Road where the Canine Unit caught up with him in a front yard.
He was taken to hospital with dog bites.
Police charged the man with conduct endangering life, possessing a drug of dependence, possessing a tazer, resisting arrest, assault with a weapon and theft.
He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 16 August.
