Indigenous dancers and didgeridoo players launched Greater Dandenong Council’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
Mayor Youhorn Chea said the document, released on Thursday 15 March, embodied the council’s commitment to advance the process of reconciliation.
He said it sought to foster increased understanding, respect and inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in this region.
Greater Dandenong is home to about 491 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and a further 3825 live within the South-East.
The plan features broad and detailed actions under the banners of relationships, respect and opportunities.
One is establishing and maintaining a Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group to monitor implementation of the plan.
Others include developing and maintain relationships, celebrating and participating in events that positively promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, providing cultural learning opportunities for employees, and respecting and preserving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.
Cr Chea said the council developed the plan in collaboration with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the broader community.
He said it was a practical means to further equality, opportunity, respect and inclusion.
“This plan shall serve as a means to achieve practical improvements in communication and collaboration between council and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” he said.
“It seeks to effect lasting advancements in health and wellbeing, educational and employment outcomes, inclusion and engagement.”
