Science joins the mix

Students rubbed shoulders with scientists in the school lab as part of a National Science Week initiative.

Lyndale Secondary College was one of 350 schools in Australia that invited science, technology, engineering and mathematics professionals and federal MPs into the classroom.

The school’s guests were Daniel Indla from Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, Justin Doery of Chadwick Geotechnics, and Bruce MP Julian Hill.

The event is an attempt by CSIRO to address a decline in enrolments in STEM subjects – despite projections that 75 per cent of future jobs will need STEM skills.

“As the nature of work changes and will continue to change in the future, it is more important than ever that students participate in and engage with STEM subjects in Australia, and that STEM professionals unite to engage students,” Lyndale’s STEM director Jonathan MacLellan said.
